Earth day
With today marking Earth Day, we’re taking a moment to reflect on Alba’s journey so far, and the meaningful actions we take every day to care for the environment around us.
Our thriving native gardens
Alba’s native gardens are flourishing. Since opening, we’ve planted over 3,000 local grasses, trees, sedges, lilies and more. Our long-term vision continues to be regenerating remnant native bushland and enhancing the existing coastal Moonah woodland.
We’re delighted to continue our collaboration with local Indigenous nursery, Peninsula Plant, to collect seeds and propagate plants of local provenance. This partnership not only helps to replace species that have been lost due to past farming practices but also encourages visitation and colonisation from a wide diversity of birds, insects and native wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for the stunning fairy wrens making habitats here at Alba.
Our water
We use 100% geothermal water. This water contains naturally occurring minerals including sulphur, calcium, magnesium and potassium and is classified as a ‘sodium chloride bicarbonate spring’. The water is naturally heated to between 37oC and 43oC in underground aquifers 550 metres below the surface and used to fill our pools each day.
The water reaches the surface at 43.6 C and is pumped to Alba’s pools control room. Here, the water passes through a sanitation system before being diverted to individual pools. The wastewater from the pools is collected in our underground storage tanks and pumped to our treatment facility, where it is cleaned and tested again before being re-injected underground, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the geo-thermal aquifer.
Supporting local and sustainable
We strive to source locally and sustainably across everything we do, from the vegetables on our restaurant menu to the expertise we call on. It’s what gives our guests that quintessentially Peninsula experience, while supporting local producers, creating local jobs and reducing our environmental impact.
Proudly carbon neutral
From the first day of operation, Alba has been offsetting emissions using Trace. Trace works with businesses like ours, as we journey to net zero, providing support and help to measure, reduce and offset our carbon footprint. Alba offset 100% of its emissions last year funding projects including:
- Ecological restoration and biodiversity enhancements in Tasmania;
- Reducing firewood consumption, improving air quality and reducing respiratory illness in women and children in Ethiopia;
- Diversifying India’s electricity production;
- Protecting and restoring a critical carbon-storing peat swamp forest in Indonesia.
Our commitment
We know there’s always more we can do. That’s why we’ve established a Sustainability Committee with representatives across all departments, dedicated to exploring new initiatives to drive meaningful change. Already, the committee has made some great strides, from repurposing worn uniforms to removing single-use plastic water bottles. We have also recently invested in a 200kW solar system to further reduce our emissions. And this is just the beginning.
